Mother cheetah with four cubs. The cheetah is also known as the 'hunting leopard' sometimes, but cheetahs and leopards are very different animals. The cheetah is built for speed, the leopard for stealth and power. They are not so closely related as may seem, and some scientists even consider the cheetah not as a cat, but as a species of its own, between the cat and the dog.

Johan W. Elzenga is a freelance photographer and writer and also editor of two photography magazines in his home country, the Netherlands. His primary interests are nature, wildlife and travel and his favorite destinations are East and Southern Africa. In the past 30 years Johan has traveled to Africa at least once a year, giving him an intimate knowledge of the animals and the people of this fascinating continent. His second favorite destination is the barren landscapes of south/western part of the USA, which he also visits with a high frequency. Johan has an extensive knowledge of digital photography and has written many books on that subject. He lives with his wife Ine in a small village south of Amsterdam.
